Ryan Aune of Cody, Wyoming apologized for his “bad camera skills” after his clip of a grizzly bear family fighting over a meal took off online, but we’re wondering how he managed to stand his ground in the first place. In the video, a full-grown grizzly bear and two cubs come barreling out of a forested area, growling intensely as they fight over some food. The bears pay Aune no mind, but it must have been terrifying.

Aune is a wildlife guide for Wyoming Wings and Waters, so to some extent, he’s used to being around wild animals. But is anyone ever really immune to grizzly bears growling and fighting? We think not.
“On my way to guide Yellowstone today I ran into momma bear fighting with her cubs over breakfast,” Aune says in the caption to his video. “Sorry for the bad camera skills! I had a flashback to when I got charged 4 years ago, so it’s hard not to flinch.”
In an interview with local KTVQ News, Aune explains how four years ago, a grizzly nearly attacked him, and he ended up shooting the bear before it got him. Aune didn’t want to kill a bear, and the whole thing was pretty traumatic.
Even though he “flinched,” the video is great. It’s short but action packed.

What Are They Fighting Over?
As to what the bears are fighting over, Aune has some photographic evidence that it’s likely a small mammal called a marmot.
In a reply to a comment on his Facebook post, he said: “For everyone saying it’s a bear the grizzlies are eating/killing they are incorrect. Bears are born in January or Feb. That’s a mom and two cubs, yes this years cubs. Here’s a blurry picture taken from an early video to help show that it was probably a marmot.”
Then he shared this photo:
Would you stand your ground if three grizzlies came rushing and growling out of a bush like that?
