The World Surf League and others are celebrating a new world record of the largest wave ever paddled into by a female. Australian Laura Enever recently set the record in Hawaii by catching a 43.6-foot wave.

Guinness World Records recently awarded her the title after Enever caught the wave at Hawaii’s North Shore of Oahu, one of the world’s most famous surfing destinations. The record includes the phrase “paddled into,” meaning Enever caught the wave the traditional way of paddling into. That’s compared to some extreme waves that require the help of a jet ski to capture.

“I would never be in this position if it weren’t for all the big wave surfers who came before me and paved the way,” says Enever in response to her record. “Especially the really brave, courageous females that have always inspired me and made me feel like I could get out there and give it a crack. So, thank you to all the amazing women, and I’m just constantly in awe.”
Enever spent seven years participating in the World Surf League before turning her focus onto big waves. She now competes in the WSL Big Wave events.
