Haleakalā National Park officials are extending the park’s closure through this Friday as crews battle wildfires on the opposite side of the island.

The devastating fires in Maui continue to burn today, but crews are making progress. The Lahaina fire that destroyed a historic town and burned down more than a thousand homes is about 85% contained. Two other fires are close to containment but continue to burn.
Emergency crews continue to search through rubble and debris, with the death toll sitting at 106 people. The fires in Maui are the deadliest in the U.S. in more than a century.
Hawaiian officials and big-name Hollywood stars are calling for people to avoid traveling to Maui, citing over-extended emergency crews and resources. These concerns are why Haleakalā National Park is closed. Park officials will reassess opening later this week.
Haleakalā National Park is known for its two distinct districts. One includes a more mountainous terrain with a dormant volcano where the park gets its name. The other area consists of a coastline on the east side of the island of Maui.
