Despite some rain-soaked states from Hurricane Idalia, parts of the U.S.’s East Coast remain very dry. The drought-like conditions impacting Shenandoah National Park have shut down fishing due to low streams and high water temperatures.

Officials with the park announced the restrictions in a press release saying, “ This closure is being implemented to ensure the long-term health of the fish populations in the park.”
Park rangers say some river sections are completely dry. The low water flow allows for the water temperature to rise and bring down the oxygen level, which can kill the fish. Officials are worried about the native brook trout that call the area home.
The closure should remain in effect until the park gets significant rain.
Besides the water concerns, the park also has moderate fire danger. Visitors should watch their campfires and only use the park-built fire grates.
