It’s the recipe for a fueled debate, but a new study is crowning the best camping city. A sticker and label company called Name Bubbles created the formula to rank 100 cities, which landed Asheville, North Carolina, as the best spot for camping fans.

The survey used 13 different factors to find the answer. The data includes everything from the number of campgrounds to hiking trails and nearby state and national parks. The rankings only focused on U.S. cities.
It’s no surprise that Asheville would land high on the list. The city is known for being nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains, with plenty of waterfalls and rivers nearby. Plus, fairly mild weather makes it an almost year-round destination for anyone looking to get outside.
In the survey, Asheville scored 72.70 out of a possible 100 points. The city has access to more than 500 miles of hiking trails and 161 spots to find camping. Following behind Asheville are Sedona, Arizona and Boulder, Colorado. The two cities combined offer more than 100 campgrounds.
However, the list may get more scrutiny from big outdoor fans after that. Cities like Austin, Texas and Orlando, Florida round out the top five. Even more surprising, popular destinations like Port Angeles, Washington, a gateway into Olympic National Park, and Missoula, Montana, are on the backend of the list, ranked at 90 and 76.
