Can You Fly With a Pet Fish? The TSA Says Go For It

In a surprising social media post, the TSA says passengers can fly with a fish. It may sound like an April Fools’ joke, but the agency that oversees safety at airports and onboard airplanes isn’t kidding around. It’s not a new policy, either.

The Transportation Security Administration shared the details in a fish-pun-filled video of someone guiding a fish through airport security checkpoints and onto a plane in a Nalgene bottle.

If you need to take your fish on your next trip, here’s what you have to do.

  • The fish needs to be swimming in a clear, spill-proof glass or plastic container.
  • The container CAN be larger than the standard 3.4oz regulation size.
  • You should expect the TSA to inspect the bottle and fish at security.
  • The fish MUST be in carry-on and can not be checked.
  • Be sure to check with your airline to see if they also allow fish.

And also, most importantly, please make sure your pet is safe.
