Camping at Bogue Chitto State Park

Camp Louisiana caught up with Jodi who told us all about camping at Bogue Chitto State Park, there great fishing ponds and their proximity to New Orleans!

Jodi’s Favorite Thing To Do In The Park
I would be on the hiking trails. Anywhere from the Gorge Trail, that continues throughout the whole park, or the trails closer to the river and swampy areas of the park.

Jodi’s Favorite Campsites
I would choose campsites 124,126 or 128. These are secluded sites that are right next to a shallow creek and a sandy area. These are the favorite 3 sites in the park, the first ones to be reserved.

From May-September, Rocky Bottom, a local outfitter, offers tubing, canoeing and kayaking. They are also available off seasons with reservations. We have ponds for fishing, 7 miles of hiking and biking trails. 14 miles of Equestrian trails, but you have to bring your own horses with current Coggins. We have a small splash park with a water slide, for younger children. We have a beach access to the Bogue Chitto River and 1,800 acres of various things to see!

Where is Bogue Chitto State Park located? What are some other attractions in the area worth checking out?
Located 6 miles south of Franklinton, LA. 70 miles north of New Orleans. Franklinton, Covington, Mandeville are the closer towns/cities with attractions.

Which one of the attractions is your favorite?
Rocky Bottom tubing is a really good tubing trip. They offer a one hour and 4 hour canoe/kayaking trip. The tubing trip is done inside of the park and it is 3 hours long. You can make it an all day trip by stopping on the river banks.

What are the campsites like within the park? Are they more open or secluded?
We have two campgrounds; the Upland and Bottomland campgrounds. The Upland Campground sites (1-46) have full hook ups (water, electric and sewer) The Bottomland Campground sites only have water and electricity. They are a little more secluded and shady than the Upland campground. Some of the sites in the Bottomland are on the water or close to a small creek.
