Shimano has made some changes to the Sustain Reel. From bass to small billfish, Sustain is built with the power and rigidity to handle a wide variety of fishing challenges while maintaining the refinement and light rotation that Sustain is known. It is noticeable lighter, CI4, carbon interfused, frame. In all of Shimano’s new technology, they use a long-stroke spool; this makes the reel so much higher and makes the line come off much smoother. It also has a tapered spool with smaller coils. All of the changes are about line capacity and better performance.Â

Internally they have micro modular gearing. It has more straight teeth, with four 1/2 to 5 teeth. When hooking a big fish, this gives you the smooth drag that you are looking for when fishing.
This reel also has X-Protect; it is a labyrinth of water intrusion. It has to go through a maze to get inside the reel. X-Protect provides high-level water resistance without sacrificing light gear and rotor rotation. Once you spin that wheel, it disperses the water throughout the reel.
By utilizing the asymmetrical, super-light, perfectly balanced design of the new Magnumlite Rotor, the Sustain requires very low inertia to start rotating, resulting in an immediate, light, smooth feel.
There are so many great things about the reels that Shimano puts out, but one of the best things about Shimano is they are also using the newest technology to build the best reel.Â
