Wildlife filmmaker and naturalist Tanner Haver caught an endearing moment on film. As a family of brown bears walks through a field, two of the three bear cubs notice a bison standing stoically in the middle of the same field. As Haver notes in his caption, it’s possible this is the first time the cubs have ever seen a bison.

When the cubs notice the other animal, two of them stop dead in their tracks as mom keeps walking. They stand up on their hind legs to get a better look at the bison, which is brown and fuzzy but somehow even bigger than their mom. They stare for a few seconds, eventually attracting the bison’s attention.

As the bison turns its head toward the young bears, they decide it’s time to stop gawking and move along.

Haver doesn’t add a location to his post, but he says he films in “greater Yellowstone and beyond,” according to his Instagram profile, and he tags the post with the hashtag #yellowstone, suggesting this encounter took place somewhere in Yellowstone National Park.

Who can blame these little cubs for staring? American bison are the largest mammals in North America. Males can weigh up to 2,000 pounds and stand 6 feet tall.
