Inspiration for artists can come from many places, especially the natural world, and one organization is looking to capture that with the help of artist residencies.

The National Park Artist Foundation initiative selects an artist for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be inspired by the outdoors of select National Parks.
The residency program application is now open for Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park. As the name suggests, the park combines active volcanos, scenic beaches, and dense rainforests.
The selected artist gets a $4,000 stipend for the month-long residency, including housing for the artist and his or her family. The artist can access a recording booth to create music or podcasts. Plus, he or she will have the chance to hold public events for readings or concerts.
The program runs from October 2-28, 2024, and the application deadline is July 31, 2023.
The National Park Artist Foundation works with the National Park Service to create these unique programs to capture the beauties of U.S. National Parks.
Past residents include Bettina Gilois, an award-winning screenwriter behind “Glory Road” and the HBO movie “Bessie,” as well as some well-known musicians, like singer-songwriter Will Oldham, better known as Bonnie “Prince” Billy.
Other national park residencies open soon at places like Big Bend, Death Valley, Dry Tortugas, Haleakalā, and the Chaco Culture National Historic Site.
