Alex Honnold and Tommy Caldwell Kick Off Epic Bike Adventure

The two biggest names in rock climbing are onto their next adventure, but this time they’re going by two wheels.

Alex Honnold and Tommy Caldwell are riding bikes from Colorado to Alaska. However, they haven’t hung up their climbing ropes just yet. The two plan on conquering several climbing routes along the way.

In an Instagram post about the trip, Caldwell said it’s already been an adventure after dodging a rattlesnake, hearing from other cyclists about outrunning a tornado and preparing themselves for an onslaught of mosquitos.

Part of the ride’s goal is to bring more awareness to Alaska’s Tongass National Forest and the need for more conservation efforts.

Caldwell spoke with Outdoors.com about a recent injury recovery and preparation for this trip.

“I mean, the main reason for wanting to do that is just I’m starved for adventure right now, so this will be a pretty mega-adventure,” says Caldwell. “But the sort of side reason, and the reason I thought of it about it originally, is because there’s this big kind of ongoing old growth extraction fight. One thing when I know there are environmental fights out there, I’m like, is there climbing there? And can I use the climbing to help the outdoor world know more about this place and therefore want to protect it?”

Caldwell has been healing from an Achilles injury. He says this may be his and Honnolds biggest adventure yet.
