The park is named from the description the settlers of the Naugatuck Valley gave the graphite they mined. Native American tribes such as the Mohegan, Paugussett, and Tunxis left behind stone implements and arrowheads to confirm their presence. Black Rock was given to Connecticut and her people in 1926 to ensure it would be preserved woodland.

Camping at Black Rock State Park

Black Rock State Park offers their guests 78 campsites during the camping season of mid-April to September 30. The park is a great getaway for new and seasoned campers alike.

The campsite offers a dumping station, bathrooms, and showers. Food concessions and picnic tables can be found in the park, as well. The park has bathrooms, picnic tables, and food concessions for the handicapped to ensure that everyone can be comfortable and enjoy Black Rock State Park.

Things To Do in Black Rock State Park

Fishing is popular at Black Rock State Park since it is designated as a Trout Park. The Mattatuck Trail offers a great hiking experience from the Grey Stone section of Waterbury to the Wigwam Reservoir in Morris. This trail overlooks the Naugatuck Valley featuring Black Rock. Many other trails are available as well. Hikes can last anywhere from 30 minutes to all day.

From the third Saturday in April to Memorial Day, gates open only on weekends.
From Memorial Day to October 31st, gates are open daily.
